The kettle had gone cold twice.
It was not even an argument. That was the strange part. It had been a good evening, and somebody had said the thing kindly, almost in passing, on the way to something else, and then everyone had moved on and she had not.
People die for things that are not true all the time.
It is not a clever line. It is not a trap. It happens to be true, and everyone in that kitchen knew it was true, which is exactly why it went in so cleanly and stayed.
So at ten past two she was sitting at the table with a cold cup in front of her, running the sum she had never once had to run before. She had built a life on this. Not a hobby. A life: the way she had raised a child, the job she had turned down, the person she had forgiven and the reasons she had used to do it. And she had built it, she now realized, on a floor she had never looked under.
She did not want a comeback. She was too tired for a comeback, and she had heard enough of them to know what one sounds like from the inside.
She wanted one honest thing she could stand on. Not everything. One thing, and its actual size, and no more than that.
That is the person this is written for, and this is not going to hand you more than there is.

They were not repeating something they had been told
Here is the distinction the whole question turns on, and it is small enough to hold in one hand.
A person can be sincerely, catastrophically wrong about something they were told, and go to their death for it. That happens. It has always happened. Sincerity is not a truth detector, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling you something.
But that is a story about people who received a claim.
The first witnesses were not in that position. Whatever else is true of them, they were making a claim about their own eyes. Not about a doctrine that had reached them from somewhere. About a Friday they had watched and a Sunday they said they had seen.
We are not able to stop speaking of what we have seen and heard.Acts 4:20
That is not a creed. It is what you say when you have been ordered to stop and cannot make your mouth agree. And it is a claim of a very particular kind, because a person who invented it would be the one person on earth who knew it was invented. What is written has men saying they cannot help speaking of what they have seen and heard, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put those words in their mouths.
That is the whole force of it. Not that they were brave. Braveness proves nothing about a fact. It is that they were in a position to know.
Now the limits, because you have already heard the objection and you deserve better than a page that pretends you did not. Acts 4:20 keeps the claim exactly as it was made under an order to stop, and the Holy Spirit has never required you to pretend an objection away.
We do not have a record of how most of the twelve died. There are traditions, some of them very old and some of them not, and they are traditions, and honest people say so. Anyone giving you eleven detailed martyrdoms with places and methods is handing you legend with a straight face, and once you find that out you will not trust anything else they told you either.
What there is, is thinner and better. Luke records that Herod killed James, the brother of John, with the sword. A Jewish historian with no interest in helping the case records a stoning in Jerusalem about thirty years after the crucifixion. A letter from Rome, written while people who remembered were still alive, speaks of Peter and Paul having suffered and died, and does not embroider it. That is a short list. It is short because it is real.
And here is the limit on the limit, which matters just as much. None of it proves the resurrection. It cannot. What it establishes is that the men at the center of this were not running a con, because nobody protects a story they made up by refusing, under threat, to unmake it.
So you are not holding proof. You are holding something that is genuinely there. What is written gives you a report on people rather than a proof, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been holding you while you looked at the difference.
You came in at two in the morning wanting one thing you could stand on. Here it is, at its actual size.
The men at the beginning were not passing on a rumor. They were saying what they said they saw, and when it cost them everything, they did not take it back. That is not proof. It is not nothing. And it is not a thing anyone has ever managed to explain away comfortably.
Which means you can stop doing the thing you have been doing since the kitchen, which is standing on a floor you are frightened to look at. Scripture never asked you to stand on a floor you were frightened to test, and the Holy Spirit has been under you the whole time you were doing it.
Look at it. It holds less weight than you were told and much more than you feared. God has never once required you to pretend to a certainty you do not have. The doubt did not disqualify you. In this house the person asking the hard question at two in the morning is usually the person who cares the most, and that has been true since Thomas said he wanted to see it himself and was not rebuked out of the room for it. What is written holds less than you were told and far more than you feared, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept it in front of you.
You are allowed to say: I do not have all of it, and I have this, and this is real. Acts 4:20 records exactly that kind of sentence and preserved it, and the Holy Spirit carries it now.
That is where faith has always actually stood. Not on the far side of every question. On one honest thing, in the dark, with the kettle cold.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud. And notice what holds them up: not your certainty, which comes and goes, but Christ in you and an authority that has been given to you and does not depend on how the night is going. God may answer your questions in His own way and in His timing, and however He answers, an honest question has never once been counted against you. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice.
- Doubt, you are not my enemy and you are not my master. God is not frightened by an honest question, and I ask mine out loud in the name of Jesus.
- Two in the morning, you do not get to decide what is true. I am standing on what is actually there, and what is there is men who said they saw Him and would not take it back.
- God, I am not pretending to a certainty I do not have. Jesus, You are the one they said they saw, and I am standing on that ground tonight with my eyes open.
