It took him eleven months and it is one word and it fits on a line.
He started in the autumn because somebody at work had said the obvious thing, which is that people die for false beliefs constantly, and he had had no answer and had not liked that.
So he did what he does. He read. Carefully, in both directions, over eleven months, in an armchair with a notebook, the way he has approached everything since he was nineteen.
And what he came out with, in the end, is not a case. It is a distinction, and it fits in six words: told, or saw. Those are different.
People who die for false beliefs are, in almost every instance, people who received something. It came to them from somebody they trusted, they believed it entirely, and they paid for it. That is the pattern and it is not in dispute.
The claim about the earliest ones is different in kind, not in strength. They were not people who had been persuaded of a report. They said they had been present.
And a person who fabricates something knows they fabricated it. On any morning, including the last one.
He is genuinely pleased with it. It is honest, it does not overclaim, it survives the objection, and it took eleven months and about forty books.
And it is in a notebook in a study, and he has told nobody, and it has been finished since June.
The commission names what he had seen and heard
Let me say what the eleven months were before anything else, because they were not indulgence.
That is real work. Most people who are handed an objection they cannot answer do one of two things: they stop thinking about it, or they adopt the first reply that makes the discomfort go away. You did neither. You went and read in both directions for a year and came back with something smaller and truer than what you started with.
The trouble is the notebook, and you have known that since about July.
Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as a compliment: the distinction you found is not yours, it is the account's own, and it was always meant to be handed on. That is not my kind reading of eleven months, it is what stands written in the twenty-second chapter of Acts, and the same Holy Spirit who preserved it has been in that armchair with you.
Read the commission, and notice how it is worded.
You will be His witness to all people of what you have seen and heard.Acts 22:15
Of what you have seen and heard. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who fixed the content of the testimony at the eyes and the ears.
Not of what you have concluded. Not of what you have been taught, and not of what you have decided is most probable. The content of the testimony is specified as the content of the eyes and the ears, which is written plainly and needs no defending.
That is your distinction, sitting in the commission itself, and it took you eleven months and forty books to arrive at what the sentence says outright.
So this is yours right now rather than pending further reading: what you have is real and it is not a private achievement, because the written word grounds the testimony in what was seen and heard and never in what was found persuasive, and the Spirit of God is the one who put the distinction in the sentence and then walked you to it the long way round.
And the honest boundary, which you would insist on yourself. It does not prove the claim. People can be sincerely mistaken about what they saw, and that objection is real and serious and it is the next thing anybody thoughtful will say to you. This addresses invention and nothing else, and the moment it is stretched further it stops being worth anything.
So take it out of the notebook.
Not a talk. Not a document. You are not going to become a person who gives talks and you should not try, and the version of you that does that would be worse than the version that read for eleven months. Nothing written requires a platform, and the Holy Spirit does most of His work in conversations between two people.
Say it to the man at work. The one who said the obvious thing in the autumn and started all of this without knowing.
Say: you said something a year ago that I did not have an answer to, and I went away and read about it, and I want to tell you what I came back with.
You are able to do that this week rather than after the next book, because Scripture puts the distinction in the commission itself in the plainest words, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept an unfinished conversation alive in you for eleven months.
He will not be defensive. People who say the obvious thing kindly almost never are, and a man being told that his offhand remark sent somebody to forty books for a year will remember that conversation for a long time.
And then say it to one more person, and this is the one that matters. Say it to somebody who is carrying the unrefined version.
Because there is a person in your life right now who has that same objection sitting in them unanswered, and who has not read forty books and will not, and who has quietly concluded that there is no answer because nobody has ever handed them one.
Eleven months produced six words. Six words fit in a conversation.
Declare this over yourself
Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a man with a notebook. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.
- Notebook I have kept this in for eleven months, you are opened. Scripture puts the witness at what he has seen and heard, and the distinction I spent a year finding was sitting in the commission the whole time.
- Fear that a man who reads in an armchair has nothing to hand anybody, get out, in the name of Jesus. Eleven months produced six words, and six words fit inside an ordinary conversation.
- Jesus, You put it in the sentence and then walked me to it the long way round, and You have never needed a year of reading handed over in order to use what it found. I am telling the man at work this week, and then I am telling one person who is carrying the unrefined version.
