There are two ways he says it and he has never once decided to have two.
If it is somebody from home, or somebody who would know, he says the name of the town flat and plain, the way you say your own surname.
And if it is a room where nobody would know, he says the name of the nearest place anybody has heard of, and then, if they push, he says the town with a small laugh in front of it. A little sound, less than a syllable, that goes in ahead of the word and does the work of an apology.
He is forty-six. He noticed the laugh about four years ago and he has not been able to stop hearing it since.
It is not a bad town. It is a small one, and there is a thing that happened there in the nineties that people still bring up, and the joke about it is not even a good joke and it is thirty years old.
His mother is buried there. He was married in the hall by the water. He learned to fish off that jetty and there is not one person on that street who would not stop for him.
And in certain rooms, in certain cities, in front of certain people, a small laugh goes in ahead of the name and he hears himself do it every single time.
He has tried to stop. That is the part that has begun to frighten him a little. He goes in knowing, and he catches it on the way out, and it happens anyway, and he has started to wonder how long a man can apologize for a place before it becomes an apology for himself.

They kept the sneer in
Let me name the laugh accurately before anything else, because it has been called cowardice for four years and it is not.
It is a bid for safety made in about a fifth of a second. It gets in ahead of somebody else's reaction and takes the sting out by supplying the sting yourself, and people who grew up outside the rooms they later work in do it constantly, in every country there is.
Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as sympathy: the account you were raised on keeps a line where somebody does exactly that to the town at its own center. That is not my kind reading of four years, it is what stands written in the first chapter of John, and the same Holy Spirit who preserved it has been in every one of those rooms with you.
Read it. It is one line and it is a sneer.
Nazareth! Can anything good come from there? Nathanael asked.John 1:46
That is a document about Jesus, keeping a recorded insult about the town Jesus was from, spoken by a man who becomes one of His own.
Now think about how easy it would have been to lose that line.
Nobody needed it. The narrative does not require it. And every account has Him from that town, over and over, attached to the name, which by any ordinary standard of making something impressive is a mistake somebody would have fixed.
They did not fix it. They wrote down the sneer and they left the town on Him.
So this is yours right now rather than pending your finding a better way to say the name: what you are inside of does not apologize for where it came from, because the written word keeps the insult in the record and keeps the town attached, and the Spirit of God is the one who saw to it that neither was quietly upgraded.
And the honest boundary, because this house does not overclaim. That is an argument about invention. A document keeping an unflattering geography is behaving oddly for something designed to impress, and that is one consideration among a number and it does not settle everything, and anybody handing it to you as a proof is going further than the material goes.
What it means at forty-six, in a room in a city, is smaller and considerably more useful: the thing you are apologizing for is the same category of thing the whole account refused to apologize for. That refusal is written into the page, and the Holy Spirit has been carrying a Name with a small town attached to it for two thousand years.
So say it flat, once, in the wrong room.
Not a speech about your hometown. Not a point being made, because the moment it becomes a point everybody can hear the second version underneath it.
Just the name, said the way you say it at home, and then carry on with the sentence.
You can do that at the next one of those rooms rather than after you have made peace with anything, because Scripture keeps the sneer about a small town in the record and never once removes the town from the Name, and the Holy Spirit has been the one steadying a man who has been paying a toll of a fifth of a second for twenty years.
And know what will happen, because it is worth knowing in advance. Almost nothing. Somebody will say they have driven through it. Somebody will not react at all. The room has never once cared as much as the fifth of a second assumed it did.
And here is the answer Nathanael got, which is the whole of what anybody ever needs to say about a place like that.
Philip did not defend the town. He did not produce a fact about it or list what it had going for it or explain that the joke is thirty years old.
He said: come and see.
That is available to you too. Your mother is buried there, you were married in the hall by the water, and there is not one person on that street who would not stop for you. What is written answers a sneer with an invitation rather than a defense, and the Holy Spirit does more through come and see than through any argument about a town.
Declare this over yourself
Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a man getting in ahead of a room. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.
- Second version of where I am from, you are dropped. Scripture kept the line where somebody sneered at the town and kept the town attached to the Name, and neither one was quietly upgraded.
- Fear that a man who apologizes for a place long enough ends up apologizing for himself, get out, in the name of Jesus. The laugh is a bid for safety made in a fifth of a second, and the room has never cared as much as that fifth of a second assumed.
- Jesus, they said it about Your town first and the record did not remove it. I am saying the name flat in the next room, the way I say it at home, and then I am carrying on with the sentence.
