My Own BeginningRomans 10:9-10

I Have Never Said It To A Human Being

This message is for the thing you settled on your own in a hotel room at thirty-four, that you have never told one living person, and which has therefore never entirely felt real

He was thirty-four, in a hotel room, in a city he does not live in, and the kettle did not work.

That detail has stayed with him for six years and he cannot explain why.

He had been circling it for a long time, in the way a man does when he is not going to be rushed and does not want to be handled. Nobody was working on him. There was no crisis. He was there for two days about a contract and had eaten badly and was watching something he was not watching.

And he settled it.

Not dramatically. There was no weeping and no light. He sat on the end of the bed and went through it one final time, the way he goes through anything, and at the end of it he said yes, silently, in the room, and then he sat there for a while and then he went to bed.

Six years.

He has never told one living person.

Not his wife. Not his brother, who would be glad. He has been to services since, four or five times, always alone, always somewhere he was not known.

And here is what has happened in those six years: it has thinned. Not disappeared, but gone slightly translucent, the way a thing does when nothing external ever touches it, and every so often he wonders whether he decided something that night or only strongly considered it.

I Have Never Said It To A Human Being

The mouth is in the sentence

Let me deal with the thinning, because you are a man who reasons and you will want to know the mechanism rather than be soothed about it.

A thing you have never said out loud has no outside. There is nothing in the world it has touched, nobody who could remind you of it, no version of it that exists anywhere except in your own recollection, and your recollection is doing all of the work on its own.

That is not a spiritual failure. That is what six years does to anything unspoken.

Now hear this and take it as settled rather than as advice: the saying is not decoration and never was, and there is a sentence in that letter that puts the mouth in beside the heart. That is not my opinion talking, it is what stands written in the tenth chapter of Romans, and the same Holy Spirit who was in that room when the kettle did not work has been with you for the whole six years.

Read both lines, because most people quote the first and lose what the second is doing.

If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.Romans 10:9-10

With your mouth.

He does not have to include it. He could have written a clean sentence about the heart and it would have been simpler.

He puts the mouth in twice, and the second time he explains the division of labor: the heart believes, the mouth professes. Two organs, one work, and the second one is a public act by its nature. A mouth is for other people. That is the whole point of a mouth.

So take this now rather than after the memory firms up on its own: the thing that happened is not thinning because it was not real, because the written word puts the mouth in the sentence beside the heart and names what each one does, and the Spirit of God has been holding a private yes together for six years without one word of help from anybody.

And I will guard it, because there is a false conclusion available here.

Nothing here says the hotel room did not count or that you must repeat it properly in front of witnesses. You said yes and it was heard and there is no probationary status attached to it.

What is written simply never leaves the mouth out, and the Holy Spirit has been at work in a man who has been to five services alone in cities where nobody knew him.

The breakthrough

So tell one person, on the phone, with the year in it.

Not your wife, if that is too large a first step and you know whether it is. One person, chosen because they will not make a thing of it: your brother, probably, who would be glad and who would not perform.

Say it plainly. Six years ago, in a hotel room, I settled something and I have never told anybody. I wanted you to know.

You are able to do that this week rather than after it feels solid again, because Scripture puts the mouth beside the heart and says outright that it is with the mouth that a man professes, and the Holy Spirit has been keeping this in one man for six years without any outside help at all.

And expect the thing that happens about four seconds after you say it, because it is nearly universal and nobody warns anybody about it.

It will become real in the room while you are still talking. Not because your brother says the right thing, and he probably will not, and it does not matter. What is written puts the mouth in beside the heart, and the Holy Spirit has held this together in you for six years.

Because the moment a thing has been said to a human being it has an outside, and an outside is what you have been missing for six years, and it is the only thing you have been missing. Romans 10:10 says it is with the mouth that a man professes, and the Holy Spirit has kept it alive with nothing outside it to help.

You did not strongly consider something in that room. You settled it, and the kettle did not work, and you remember it exactly.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a man auditing his own memory. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Six years of keeping it in one room, you are ended. Scripture puts the mouth in the sentence beside the heart, twice, and says plainly that the heart believes and the mouth professes.
  2. Fear that I only strongly considered it, get out, in the name of Jesus. A thing that has never been said out loud has no outside, and six years does that to anything unspoken, and I remember that room exactly.
  3. Jesus, You have held a private yes together in me for six years with nobody else touching it. This week one person gets told on the phone, with the year in it, in two plain sentences.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
