My Own Beginning1 John 5:11-12

The Story I Have Told Two Hundred Times

This message is for the testimony you have told so many times that it runs by itself, and the fact that you cannot find yourself anywhere in it any more

He has told it, at a conservative estimate, two hundred times.

It is a good story. It is also completely true, which he wants said, because after this many tellings a man starts to wonder and he has checked it against his sister and it holds.

There is the flat. There is the eight months. There is the specific evening and the specific thing his friend said in a doorway, which is the line everybody remembers and which he has learned to deliver with a small pause before it.

That pause is the problem.

He knows exactly where the pause goes. He knows which bit gets the laugh, and which bit goes quiet, and how long to leave the quiet before he moves. He knows the whole shape of it the way you know a route you drive.

And somewhere in the last few years he has stopped being able to find himself in it.

He is not backslidden. He would like that noted. He prays, he serves, he is the one people ring, and if you asked him he would tell you plainly that he loves God.

But the story is nineteen years old and it is the only thing he has to say about himself, and last month somebody asked him what God had been doing in him lately.

And he told the story.

He heard himself do it. Started at the flat, went to the eight months, put the pause in.

The Story I Have Told Two Hundred Times

Not whoever has the account

Let me name what happened last month, because it deserves better than shame.

You did not lie. Everything you said was true. What you did was answer a present-tense question with a past-tense document, because the document is polished and available and the present tense would have required you to look.

That is not hypocrisy. That is what happens when a thing gets good enough to run without you.

Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as challenge: what you have is not the account, and there is a line in that letter that draws the distinction in about nine words. That is not my kindness talking, it is what stands written in the fifth chapter of First John, and the same Holy Spirit who was in the doorway nineteen years ago is on that wall outside the hall with you now.

Read it slowly, because the second sentence is doing the work.

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.1 John 5:11-12

Whoever has the Son has life.

Not whoever has the story. Not whoever has the evening in the flat, or the friend in the doorway, or the eight months.

And notice where the word testimony lands in that first sentence. It is not pointed at your narrative at all. The testimony is what God has said and done, and your account is a true report of one place where it touched a life. The report is not the thing.

So take this now rather than after some new experience worth telling: you are not living off a nineteen-year-old evening, because the written word puts life in the Son in the present tense and never once locates it in the account, and the Spirit of God has been with you in every one of the years you have no material from.

And let me guard it, because there is a cruel version of this teaching.

Nothing here says the story is dead weight or that you should stop telling it. Tell it. It is true and it has done real work in real people, and the man who heard it in a car in the second year is still walking because of it.

What is written simply refuses to let the report stand in for the life, and the Holy Spirit has never once asked anybody to keep producing material.

The breakthrough

So say something present tense out loud this week, to one person, that is not from the story.

It will be small. That is expected, and the smallness is not a sign of decline: it is what nineteen years of ordinary walking actually produces, and you have been comparing it to your best material. What is written says whoever has the Son has life in the present tense, and the Holy Spirit has been at work in you through nineteen quiet years.

I have been uneasy about the way I talked to my son on Saturday and I have not been able to put it down. That kind. Unfinished, undramatic, current.

You are able to do that this week rather than after something happens worth reporting, because Scripture says whoever has the Son has life in the present tense and never locates it in a testimony, and the Holy Spirit has been at work in you across nineteen years you have no anecdotes from.

And say this year out loud, on your own, before you talk to anybody.

Not the old year. Not the flat and not the eight months. This one, the actual number, and then one true sentence about where you are standing in it. 1 John 5:12 never locates that life in the telling of it, and the Holy Spirit has never asked anybody to keep producing material.

Because the man in that story was twenty-six and frightened and he is not who you are any more, and you have been introducing yourself as him for nineteen years, and the man on the wall outside the hall with the two paper cups is the one God is actually dealing with. What is written puts life in the Son and not in the account, and the Holy Spirit is the one dealing with the man on the wall with the two paper cups.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a man reciting a route he knows. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Account that runs by itself while I stand behind it, you are set down. Scripture says whoever has the Son has life, in the present tense, and never once puts that life in the telling of it.
  2. Fear that nineteen quiet years mean I have nothing to say, get out, in the name of Jesus. I answered a present-tense question with a polished document last month, and I heard myself do it, and the pause went in exactly where it always goes.
  3. Jesus, You have been with me in every year I have no material from. This year is getting said out loud, and one true unfinished sentence is going to one person this week.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
