My Own BeginningJohn 9:25

The Night I Cannot Point To

This message is for the fact that everybody at that table had a night to describe and you have never had one, and you have started quietly avoiding the question

It goes round the table and she can feel it coming from three people away.

They are doing testimonies. Not formally, nobody announced it, but somebody told theirs and now it is happening, and every single one is extraordinary.

A man who was in a cell. A woman who describes a specific Thursday in a specific car and the exact words she said. Somebody's brother in another country, in a hospital, at four in the morning.

They are all real. That is not her difficulty. She is not sitting there doubting any of it and she is genuinely glad, and she has heard one of these stories twice before and it still moves her.

Her difficulty is that it will be her turn in about ninety seconds.

And she does not have one.

There is no night. There is no room and no year and no sentence she said. There was a family that took her, and a hall with a bad heater, and about nine years in which she cannot identify a single day on which she was outside it and then inside it.

So she has a thing she does now. She says something warm about somebody else's story and asks a question, and it moves on, and it works every time.

She has been doing that for six years.

The Night I Cannot Point To

One sentence, under questioning

Let me say the thing you have never quite let yourself say, because you are the one who deflects and the deflecting has cost you.

You are not worried that you have a boring story. You are worried that you do not have one because there is nothing to tell.

Six years of turning the question is six years of a suspicion getting bigger in the dark. And nobody at that table would ever say what you have been saying to yourself, which is that the people with the cell and the Thursday and the four in the morning have something you do not have.

Now hear this and take it as already settled rather than as reassurance: your beginning is not disqualified by being undramatic, and there is a man in that ninth chapter of John who is questioned hard and answers in one sentence. That is not my kindness talking, it is what stands written, and the same Holy Spirit who has been in that hall with the bad heater for nine years is at that table with you.

Read what he says. He is under pressure from people trying to make him contradict himself.

Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!John 9:25

That is the whole testimony.

He does not know the theology. He is asked about the mechanism and he says plainly that he cannot answer it. There is no dramatic account of the moment, no words he said, no date.

One thing I do know. That sentence went into the record and it has been read for two thousand years and nobody has ever called it thin.

So take this now rather than after some experience you can describe: what happened in you is real without being a story, because the written word receives one plain sentence under hostile questioning and keeps it, and the Spirit of God has been at work in you across nine years you cannot cut into a before and an after.

And I will guard this properly, because it would be easy to swing the other way.

Nothing here says the man in the cell is exaggerating or that the Thursday in the car did not happen. It did. Sudden beginnings are real and they are not performances, and the woman who can name the hour is not showing off by naming it.

What is written simply never makes drama the test, and the Holy Spirit has always worked in slow places as well as loud ones, in exactly the same person.

The breakthrough

So say your own year out loud. Or your season, if the year will not come.

Not at the table, not yet. On your own, this week, in the car or the kitchen: it was somewhere in those nine years, and by the end of them I was His.

That is not a smaller version of a testimony. That is a testimony, and you have never once said it out loud, which is why it has never felt like one.

You are able to say that this week rather than after something happens to you, because Scripture keeps one flat sentence spoken under interrogation and treats it as the whole answer, and the Holy Spirit has been doing His work in you since before you could have named a date.

And then stop turning the question.

Next time it comes round that table, say the true thing in about eleven seconds. I do not have a night. I was taken in by a family and there was a hall with a terrible heater and somewhere in nine years it became mine.

Somebody at that table will exhale when you say it.

There is almost always one, and they have been doing exactly what you have been doing, and they have never heard anybody say it out loud either. Six years of your deflecting has been protecting them from the only sentence that would have helped. What is written keeps one plain sentence spoken under hostile questioning, and the Holy Spirit has been at work in you since before you could have named a date.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a woman waiting for her turn to come round. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Question I have been dodging round tables, you are answered. Scripture keeps one plain sentence spoken under hostile questioning, with no date and no mechanism, and calls that the whole testimony.
  2. Fear that I deflect because there is nothing to tell, get out, in the name of Jesus. Six years of turning the question is six years of feeding a suspicion in the dark, and a family took me in and a hall had a bad heater and somewhere in nine years I became His, and I am His now.
  3. Jesus, You were working in me before I could have named a day. This week I am saying my own season out loud in my own voice, and the next time it comes round the table I am not turning it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
