They Argued About Who Was Greatest

This message is for the thing you actually wanted when you volunteered, which you have never said out loud to anybody in eleven years

Eleven years ago she put her hand up for something nobody else wanted and she has done it every week since.

It is not glamorous work and she has never once complained about it and she is genuinely good at it. People say her name when they list who holds that building together, and they are right to.

And she knows exactly why she put her hand up.

It was three weeks after a woman she will not name here was given something she had wanted, in front of everybody, with a small speech attached. And she went home from that evening and sat in her car outside her own house, and what she felt was not disappointment.

It was a decision. If that is how it works here, then I will be so necessary that it does not matter.

That is the sentence. She has never said it out loud to one living person in eleven years, and she can still hear the exact tone she thought it in.

And the eleven years have been real. That is the confusing part, and it is why she has never brought it to anybody. She loves those people. The work is genuinely for them and she would do it if nobody ever noticed, and she has, most weeks, for over a decade.

But underneath it, at the bottom, there is a car outside a house and a woman making a cold decision at thirty-four.

And every so often, when somebody thanks her publicly, a very small thing goes through her that she recognizes and does not like, and she smiles and says it is nothing.

They Argued About Who Was Greatest

They were arguing about it on the road and they went quiet when He asked

Let me be exact about the eleven years first, because they have been quietly treated as compromised and they are not.

A mixed motive does not turn work into theater. Those people were genuinely served, every week, for over a decade, by somebody who would have done it unnoticed and often did. That is not undone by what happened in a car in a September.

What is true is that you have been carrying one sentence alone for eleven years, and one sentence carried alone gets heavier every year, and it has begun to come up when people thank you, which is exactly when it hurts most.

Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as absolution: the record keeps a day when the closest ones to Him were doing precisely this. That is not my kind reading of a long decade, it is what stands written in the ninth chapter of Mark, and the same Holy Spirit who preserved it has been in that hall with you every week.

Read it, and notice the second half, because the second half is the part almost nobody quotes.

They came to Capernaum. When He was in the house, He asked them, What were you arguing about on the road? But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.Mark 9:33-34

But they kept quiet.

They were arguing about rank. On the road. In the middle of everything, having seen what they had seen, they were working out among themselves which of them was the most important.

And when He asked them straight out, they said nothing, because they knew perfectly well how it would sound.

Now think about who is in that scene. Those men are the founding leadership. That story is being told, later, to communities who looked up to them, and it makes them look small and petty and exactly like anybody else, and somebody wrote it down and kept it.

So this is yours right now rather than pending a purer motive: the account you are inside of does not require clean hands to be useful, because the written word keeps its own leaders arguing about rank and keeps their embarrassed silence, and the Spirit of God is the one who saw to it that the unflattering afternoon survived.

And the honest boundary, because this house does not overclaim. That is an argument about invention and it is one consideration among several. It does not settle everything, and people weigh it differently, and it is not a proof and you should not carry it as one.

The breakthrough

So say the sentence to one person.

Out loud, in the exact tone you thought it in. Not softened, not explained, not put into the language you would use if you were describing it to yourself kindly. What is written keeps people saying the unflattering thing plainly, and the Holy Spirit does more with an unedited sentence than with a careful one.

If that is how it works here, then I will be so necessary that it does not matter.

You are able to say that today rather than after you have sorted your motives out, because Scripture keeps its own leaders arguing about rank on a road and keeps the silence they fell into when they were asked, and the Holy Spirit has never once required clean hands before He would use a pair.

And choose somebody who will not try to fix it. This does not need fixing and it does not need forgiving in a hurry. It needs one other human being to have heard it, so that eleven years stops being a thing you know alone at the bottom of a car.

And then look at what the eleven years actually became, which is the part you have not let yourself have, because what is written says God works in you both to will and to act, and the Holy Spirit has been changing the motive underneath the work while the work went on.

Whatever you started with, you did not stay there. A woman who would do it unnoticed and often does is not a woman running a strategy. The strategy would have failed by about year three, because strategies do not survive that many Tuesdays with nobody watching.

Somewhere in there it stopped being about the car, and like the man who learned to cook, you will not be able to tell anybody which week.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as somebody who has to arrive clean. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Reason I have never said out loud, you are said out loud tonight. Scripture keeps the day the closest ones argued about who was greatest and keeps the silence they fell into when He asked, and nobody made it keep either.
  2. Fear that eleven years of real work are compromised by one decision in a car, get out, in the name of Jesus. A strategy does not survive that many Tuesdays with nobody watching, and mine did not stay a strategy past about year three.
  3. Jesus, You kept Your own leadership looking small in the record and used them anyway, and You have never once required clean hands before You would use a pair. I am saying the sentence to one person this week, in the tone I thought it in.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
