There were six people in the room and everybody in that building thinks there were four.
It was a Tuesday three years ago. It ran from about half past seven until twenty past eleven, and it was the worst four hours any of them had spent together, and two men said things to each other that neither has repeated since.
It ended well, or well enough. There was an outcome. Everybody shook hands, which sounds better than it was.
And in the car park, at about half past eleven, somebody said: I think we agree that what happened in there stays in there.
Everybody agreed. Quickly, and with real relief, and he was one of the ones who agreed most quickly.
The version that the building has is that there was a long discussion, that it was robust, that a decision was reached, and that everybody is fully behind it.
Every word of that is technically true.
He is the one who wrote the paragraph. He is good at paragraphs. That is one of the reasons he was in the room.
Three years.
And two of the six have left since, and both of them left for reasons that were given publicly and that he does not think are the whole reason, and he has never once asked either of them, because asking would require going back into a room that six people agreed to seal.
And the thing that has started to bother him is not the sealing. It is that four people at the next level down have been trying to work out for three years why something in that building changed on a Tuesday in March, and nobody will tell them, and two of them have started constructing their own explanation, and he has heard it, and it is worse than what happened.
A founding letter contains a public disagreement, written by one of them
Let me defend the car park before anything else, because that agreement was not a conspiracy.
Six exhausted people at half past eleven at night, after four hours of the worst kind of conversation, agreed to contain something so that it would not spread. That instinct is protective and it is often right, and there are rooms where the alternative is a fire that burns through a hundred people who were never in it.
The trouble is that a seal is not a treatment. It stops the thing spreading and it does not stop the thing existing, and three years later something is still leaking out sideways in a form nobody chose.
Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as license: the collection you build everything on contains a public disagreement between two of its most senior figures, written down by one of them, in a letter meant to be read aloud. That is not my kind reading of three years, it is what stands written in the second chapter of Galatians, and the same Holy Spirit who preserved it was in that room on the Tuesday.
Read it, and notice that he does not soften a word.
When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.Galatians 2:11
That is Paul, writing about Peter, by name, in a letter to churches.
He goes on to describe what Peter did and why it was wrong and who else was drawn into it, and he does not add a line saying that they sorted it out afterwards, and he does not say there was a robust discussion and a decision was reached.
Now think about what that letter is. It was copied. It was circulated. It became part of the collection that both of those men are honored in, and nobody at any point in the following centuries quietly removed the awkward paragraph.
So this is yours right now rather than pending anybody's release from that car park: what you serve does not run on an agreed version, because the written word keeps a named public disagreement between its two most senior men and nobody edited it out, and the Spirit of God is the one who saw to it that the unmanaged account is the one that survived.
And the honest boundary, because this house does not overclaim. A document keeping damaging material about its own leadership is an argument about invention and one consideration among several. It does not settle everything and it is not a proof, and it does not tell you what to do on Tuesday.
So go back to the five.
Not to break the seal unilaterally, which would be a betrayal of the one thing six exhausted people did agree on, and would cost you more than it repaired.
Go to them and say the true thing: that four people at the next level have been carrying a version for three years, that at least two of them have built something worse than what happened, and that the seal has stopped it spreading and has not stopped it existing.
You are able to raise that this month rather than after somebody else leaves, because Scripture keeps a named disagreement between its two most senior figures in a letter meant to be read out, and the Holy Spirit has never required a room to be tidy before He would use it.
And propose something small and specific, because we should be more open will die in that meeting and you know it. Propose one sentence that all six agree to, that says more than the paragraph you wrote and less than the room, and that can be said to the four people at the next level down by any of the six.
Something like: there was a serious disagreement about direction, it was resolved, and two of us found afterwards that we could not stay, and that is what we are able to say.
That is not a breach. It is a truthful boundary rather than a smooth one, and people can live inside a truthful boundary. They cannot live inside a smooth one, which is why they build.
And ask the two who left. Separately, privately, three years late. You have never once asked them, and you have been telling yourself it is because of the seal, and it is not. What is written keeps the names of people who fell out and were still honored, and the Holy Spirit is the one who goes with a man making a late phone call.
Declare this over yourself
Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as the man who writes the paragraphs. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.
