The First WitnessesMark 3:21

His Own Family Said It

This message is for the sentence your own family said about you when you changed, which somebody repeated back to you, and the four years you have carried it

He was not supposed to hear it and he heard it in the worst possible way, which is secondhand and kindly.

A cousin told him. Not to wound him. She told him because she thought he already knew and because she was defending him, four years after the fact, in a conversation about something else entirely.

What his uncle had said, in his mother's kitchen, in the year everything changed, was: he has gone strange, and somebody needs to take him in hand before he does something.

There is a longer version. The cousin gave him the longer version and then wished she had not.

He was thirty-one that year. He had not gone strange. He had changed his life fairly comprehensively and he had done it quickly, and from the outside it would have looked exactly like a man going strange, and he can see that now and could not see it then.

Nobody has ever said it to his face. That is the arrangement. Everybody was perfectly warm at the wedding and everybody comes to things and his uncle drove four hours in February when the baby was ill.

And underneath all of it, for four years, is a sentence he has never been able to put down: take him in hand.

He goes back into that kitchen twice a year. He eats and he is a good nephew and he asks about the business.

And every time, at some point in the evening, he catches himself performing normality. Speaking a little more moderately than he means to. Leaving certain things out. Being, in his own mother's kitchen, a slightly reduced version of himself so that nobody has to reach for that sentence again.

His Own Family Said It

Somebody wrote that down about their own founder

Let me be fair to your uncle before anything else, because bitterness would cost you more than the sentence has.

He was watching a man of thirty-one turn his life over in a matter of months. He did not have your insides. He had the outside, which looked alarming, and he loves you, and love that does not understand something often comes out as an instruction about what should be done with you.

That does not make the sentence harmless. It makes it human, and those are different things.

Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as comfort: the account you are part of keeps the very same sentence about its own center, and nobody made it. That is not my kind reading of four years, it is what stands written in the third chapter of Mark, and the same Holy Spirit who preserved it has been in your mother's kitchen twice a year with you.

Read it, and then sit with the fact that somebody chose to keep it.

When His family heard about this, they went to take charge of Him, for they said, He is out of His mind.Mark 3:21

His family. To take charge of Him. He is out of His mind.

Take him in hand. It is the same sentence. It is almost word for word the sentence said in your mother's kitchen, about you, in the year everything changed.

Now think about what that costs a document.

Nobody founding a movement writes that down. You would not include the detail that the founder's own relatives tried to come and collect him, and you certainly would not record the reason they gave. Mark is the shortest of the accounts, which means every line in it survived a decision to keep it, and somebody kept that one.

So this is yours right now rather than pending your family's understanding: you are inside something whose record refused to tidy itself, because the written word keeps the line where His own household said He had lost His mind, and the Spirit of God is the one who saw to it that the humiliating verse was not cut.

And the honest boundary, because this house does not overclaim. That kind of detail is an argument about invention and it is one consideration among several. It does not settle everything and people argue about how much weight it carries, and anybody who hands it to you as a proof is handing you something they do not have.

What it does, tonight, is smaller and more useful. It puts you in extremely specific company.

The breakthrough

So stop reducing yourself at that table.

Four years of speaking a little more moderately than you mean to, in your own mother's kitchen, so that nobody has to reach for a sentence they said once when they were frightened.

That is not peacemaking. That is a man paying rent on somebody else's worst moment.

You are not out of your mind and you never were. That is already true rather than something to be granted, because the written word keeps that exact accusation against its own center and preserves it without embarrassment, and the Holy Spirit has been the one steadying a man who changed his whole life at thirty-one.

So go in December and be the size you actually are. Not louder. Not a point being made. Just do not leave things out.

And consider telling your uncle you know. Not as an accusation, and not for an apology, because he may not have one and you do not need it. Something like: I know what you said in that kitchen, and I know why, and I want you to know I understand it and that it is finished.

That sentence will cost you eleven seconds and it may hand a seventy year old man something he has been carrying for four years too.

Because here is what is likely true and worth holding: he has thought about it more than you know. Men of that kind usually have. And he drove four hours in February.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a man paying rent at his mother's table. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Sentence they said about me in that kitchen, you are not my name. Scripture keeps the line where His own family went to take charge of Him and said He was out of His mind, and somebody chose to keep it.
  2. Fear that being the size I actually am will make somebody reach for that sentence again, get out, in the name of Jesus. I have been paying rent on one frightened evening for four years, and the rent stops in December.
  3. Jesus, they said it about You first and Your record did not tidy it away. I am going in and not leaving things out, and I am telling my uncle that I know and that it is finished.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
