They walk that path about once a month and have for nine years and it is where everything gets said.
Her friend is not hostile. That is worth establishing first because it changes the whole shape of it. She came to the hospital. She is godmother to one of the children. She does not believe any of it and has not since she was about twenty and she has never once been unkind about it.
They were somewhere past the second gate, going into the wind, and it had come up the way it does.
And she said, without any weight on it at all, half into the wind: people die for lies all the time, though. That has never been the good bit.
And then she said something about a bird.
That was fourteen months ago.
They have walked that path fourteen times since. It has not come up again and neither of them has raised it, and the friendship is entirely fine, and there is a sentence sitting in the middle of it that one of them has thought about roughly weekly since the spring before last.
She has not answered it. She has not tried, out loud, in fourteen months.
And what has begun to bother her is not that she has no answer. It is that she has stopped expecting to have one, and that a small thing has gone quiet in her that used to speak up, and that she has started steering the conversation on that path without deciding to.

She was right, and there is one word she did not touch
Let me start by agreeing with her completely, because she deserves it and because it has never once been said out loud.
People do die for things that are not true. Constantly, sincerely, at enormous cost, all through history and in this century. Anybody who has ever used nobody dies for a lie as though it settled something has been handing round an argument that does not survive twenty seconds of thinking, and your friend took twenty seconds and said so kindly into the wind.
She was right. Say that to yourself first, because the fourteen months of silence have partly been about not wanting to concede it.
Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as a comeback: there is a narrower thing underneath, and it survives her being right, and it turns on one word. That is not my kind reading of fourteen months, it is what stands written in the fifteenth chapter of John, and the same Holy Spirit who preserved it was on that path with the two of you.
Read what He tells them their qualification is.
And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.John 15:27
Because you have been with me from the beginning. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who grounds a testimony in presence rather than in persuasion.
That is the word. Not because they were persuaded. Not because they had been taught it well. Because they had been there.
So here is the distinction, and it is the entire content of what you have been unable to say, and it is written into that one clause rather than invented by anybody, with the Holy Spirit holding it there for fourteen months.
The people who die for false things are, almost without exception, people who were told. They received something, they believed it deeply, and they paid for it. That is the ordinary and terrible pattern and your friend is describing it accurately.
The claim about the first ones is different in kind. Not different in truth, and not stronger for being different. Different in what they were in a position to know.
They were not saying I have been convinced of this. They were saying I was there and I saw it. And a person who has invented something knows they have invented it, and knows it on the morning they are killed for it.
So this is yours right now rather than pending a cleverer walk: what you have to say is small and it holds, because the written word grounds their testimony in having been present rather than in having been persuaded, and the Spirit of God is the one who kept that word in the sentence.
And the honest limit, which she will respect more than the argument. This does not prove they were right. People can be sincerely wrong about what they saw, and that is a real objection and she may make it and it is a good one. What it addresses is invention, and only invention.
So bring it up on the path.
Not as a rebuttal. Fourteen months is far too long for a rebuttal and she would hear it as one and she would be right to.
Bring it up as an admission, which is what it actually is. Say: you said something on this path about people dying for lies, and I have thought about it every week since and I have never answered you, and I want to tell you why.
You can say that on the next walk rather than after you have read anything, because Scripture puts their qualification in one word about having been present, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept a sentence alive in you for fourteen months rather than letting you file it.
Then give her the whole of it, including the concession, in this order. That she was right. That the argument as usually stated does not work. That there is a narrower version about people who claimed to have been there rather than to have been told. And that it addresses invention and does not prove the claim.
She will take that. People who say true things kindly into the wind are not looking to win; they are looking to find out whether you are the kind of person who can hear one. Nothing written asks you to defeat a friend, and the Holy Spirit has done a great deal of His work on paths between two people walking.
And notice what fourteen months of not answering has actually done, because it is the reason this matters more than the argument. Something in you has gone quiet and started steering. That is the real cost, and it did not come from her sentence. It came from carrying it alone.
Declare this over yourself
Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as somebody who has to win a path. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.
- Sentence I have carried unanswered for fourteen months, you are answered on this path. Scripture grounds their witness in having been there from the beginning rather than in having been persuaded, and that is the whole of the distinction.
- Fear that answering her means arguing with a friend of nine years, get out, in the name of Jesus. She said a true thing kindly into the wind, and people who do that are finding out whether I can hear one, not trying to win.
- Jesus, You put their qualification in one word about being present, and You have never needed the argument to be bigger than that word. I am bringing it up on the next walk as an admission, and I am telling her she was right first.
