Why They DiedRevelation 2:13

They Use His Name As An Argument

This message is for your cousin's husband, who was hurt for this in a country you have not been back to in nine years, and the discomfort of hearing his name used from a platform as a point

The man on the platform did not know anybody in that room was related to him.

He was making a point about courage and he needed an example, and he used one, and he used it well, and he gave the name and the country and roughly what happened and he said it took eleven weeks.

It did not take eleven weeks. It took a great deal longer than that and the part everybody repeats is not the worst part, and the worst part is not repeated because nobody outside the family knows it.

His cousin's husband. A quiet man. Nobody's idea of a hero and the last man in that town anybody would have picked out of a line.

He is alive. That is the first thing people get wrong when the story travels. He is alive, and he is sixty-four, and there is a thing wrong with one of his hands that will not now be repaired, and he grows something on a roof and he does not talk about any of it.

And a man on a platform in another country, in a language that man does not speak, gave his name to four hundred people on a Thursday night as a point in an argument about how we know this is true.

And he sat in the seventh row and clapped with everybody else.

That was in October. He has not gone back to that town in nine years for reasons that are about money and visas and a job and a wife who has never been, and all of those reasons are real and none of them is the whole reason.

They Use His Name As An Argument

The record names him and does not make him a point

Let me be fair to the man on the platform first, because he was not being careless in the way that would deserve anger.

He needed an example and he used a real one and he did not sneer and he did not enjoy it. Most people in that room went home more serious than they arrived. That is not nothing and it was not malicious.

What he did do was compress a man into ninety seconds and get one number wrong, and turn a living person with a hand that does not work into a step in a sequence.

Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as sympathy: the record you build on names people who paid and does not turn them into arguments. That is not my kind reading of an October evening, it is what stands written in the second chapter of Revelation, and the same Holy Spirit who preserved it was in the seventh row with you.

Read it, and notice what is there and what is not.

I know where you live, where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city.Revelation 2:13

Antipas, my faithful witness.

A name. A place. A description of what he was. And then the sentence moves on.

There is no account of what was done to him. There is no number of weeks. There is nothing to make a room go quiet, and there is not one word using him to establish anything.

He is named, and he is called faithful, and he is spoken of by the One he was faithful to, and that is the whole of it.

So this is yours right now rather than pending an apology from anybody: your cousin's husband was never material, because the written word honors a man by naming him and declines to make him a proof, and the Spirit of God is the one who kept the version with nothing added to it.

And the honest boundary, because this house does not overclaim. Costly witness does not establish that a claim is true. It never has and it cannot, and the man on the platform was using it as though it could, and that is a second thing he got wrong and it is the larger of the two.

The breakthrough

So write to him.

Not about October. He does not need to know that a man in another country used his name, and telling him would hand him a burden that is not his and cannot be put down.

Write to him about the roof, and what he is growing, and about your children. Write in the language he actually speaks even if it takes you an evening and a dictionary.

You can do that this week rather than after you have worked out how to feel about a platform, because Scripture honors a man by naming him and asking nothing of him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept a quiet sixty-four year old in your mind since a Thursday in October.

And then look at the nine years properly.

Money and visas and a job and a wife who has never been. Every one of those is real. And underneath them is the other thing, which is that going back means sitting in front of a hand that does not work, in a house where nobody makes a point of anything, and being the cousin who left.

That is a hard thing and it is not shameful. But nine years is long enough for a reason to become a habit, and habits do not announce themselves.

Go back. Not to make anything right, because nothing there is owed to you or by you. Go and sit on that roof.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a man in the seventh row. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Use they have made of his name, you stop at this table. Scripture names Antipas as a faithful witness and adds nothing at all, no account of what was done and no number of weeks, and it never once makes him a step in a sequence.
  2. Fear that nine years of money and visas and a job is the whole reason I have not gone back, get out, in the name of Jesus. Underneath them is a hand that does not work and a house where nobody makes a point of anything, and a reason left long enough becomes a habit.
  3. Jesus, You honor a man by naming him and asking nothing of him, and You have never needed anybody's suffering enlarged to move a room. I am writing to him this week in his own language, and I am going and sitting on that roof.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
