What Our Hands Have Touched

This message is for your daughter's university essay that treated the faith of your house as a social artifact, and the pride and the cold that arrived in the same minute

She sent it to him herself, which is the part he keeps coming back to.

She did not have to. She is twenty and lives four hours away and there is no rule that says a father gets to read your coursework. She attached it with a message that said thought you might find this interesting, got a good mark for it, and there was a little face at the end of it.

Twelve pages. It was good. He is not being kind about that: it was properly good, better than anything he wrote at twenty, and the argument was clean and it did the thing where it fairly states the other side before it moves.

And the subject was the transmission of religious identity in migrant households.

Which is his house. His mother's house before it. The kitchen, the meal on Thursdays, the thing they say over the bread, the way his own father did the same thing with his hands.

And she wrote about it beautifully and from the outside.

Nothing in it was hostile. She did not sneer at one single thing. She described a mechanism, and every part of the mechanism she described was accurate, and he read it in one sitting at the table with the light going.

He was proud of her. That is true and it is not a consolation, it is a fact and he felt it the whole way through.

And underneath the pride there was a cold thing that arrived at about page four and did not leave.

Because if all of that is the mechanism, then what is he? A carrier. A stage in a process she can now name in academic English. And if she can account for the whole of it that way, then he has spent forty-eight years inside a thing that has an explanation from the outside, and he has never once looked at it from there.

He has not replied to the message. It has been eleven days.

What Our Hands Have Touched

The claim is about hands and eyes, not about a mechanism

Let me be careful with the essay before anything else, because it does not deserve to be treated as an attack and treating it that way would be the fastest way to lose your daughter.

She was right about the mechanism. Faith does travel through households. It does move by the meal and the phrase over the bread and the hands, and anybody who denies that has not watched a family. Her twelve pages are accurate and you knew it as you read them, which is exactly why the cold arrived.

Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as reassurance: a description of how something travels says nothing at all about whether it is true. That is not my kind reading of eleven days, it is what stands written at the opening of John's first letter, and the same Holy Spirit who preserved that page was at the table with the light going.

Read what the man reaches for when he wants to say what he is talking about.

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched, this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.1 John 1:1

Heard. Seen. Looked at. Touched.

Four verbs and every one of them is a body doing something. He is not describing a tradition and he is not describing an inheritance. He is making a claim about a physical encounter and staking the letter on it.

So this is yours right now rather than pending your ability to argue with a twenty year old: what came down through your mother's kitchen is not the same category as the thing her essay described, because the written word grounds it in eyes and hands and ears rather than in transmission, and the Spirit of God is the one who has carried that claim through every household it has passed through since.

Now let me say the harder half, and I will not skip it, because she would spot it and so would you.

Her essay could be entirely right about the mechanism and the claim could still be false. And the claim could be entirely true and the mechanism would still be exactly what she described. Nothing written confuses the two, and the Holy Spirit has been moving through households and through eyewitnesses at the same time since the beginning. Those two things do not touch each other. That is the whole point and it cuts both ways, and if you write back to her you should say so first, because it is the honest thing and because she will hear you differently once you have conceded what is true.

What you are not is a carrier. A carrier is somebody moving something they never inspected. You have been inside this for forty-eight years and you have carried it through two funerals and one year you do not talk about, and that is not a mechanism operating, that is a man holding something.

And here is the guard, because it is the whole of this site: nothing here closes the question. What is written gives you ground to stand on and not the end of the argument, and the Holy Spirit has never asked a father to have it settled before he is allowed to answer his daughter.

The breakthrough

So write back.

Eleven days is long enough for a twenty year old to start constructing a reason, and the reason she is constructing will be worse than the truth.

Tell her it was good, and mean it, and be specific about which part, because a specific compliment is the only kind that lands. Then tell her the true thing: that you were proud the whole way through and that something in you went cold at about page four, and that you have taken eleven days to work out what it was.

You can say that today rather than after you have thought of something clever, because Scripture stakes the claim on hands and eyes and ears rather than on how a thing travels, and the Holy Spirit is the one who will hold a father steady in a plain conversation.

And then ask her something. Not a challenge. A real question, about her own work, that you actually want the answer to.

Because here is what she has done that nobody has said out loud yet. She sent it to you. Of everybody she could have sent twelve pages about the transmission of religious identity in migrant households, she sent it to the man in the middle of it, with a little face at the end.

That is not a girl leaving. That is a girl asking whether you can still talk.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a man being explained. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Cold that came in with the pride, you are named at this table. Scripture stakes the whole letter on what was heard and seen and touched, which is a different category from how a thing travels through a household.
  2. Fear that I am a carrier and my whole life has an explanation from the outside, get out, in the name of Jesus. A carrier moves something he never inspected, and I have carried this through two funerals and the year I do not talk about.
  3. Jesus, You came into a body that could be looked at and handled, and You have never asked me to have this settled before I answer my daughter. I am writing back today, and I am telling her which part of page four went cold.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
