Was It InventedActs 26:26

Not Done In A Corner

This message is for the thing you read at one in the morning about the resurrection being borrowed from older religions, and the fact that you have not been able to un-read it since

It was one in the morning and she was not looking for it.

She had gone to bed at eleven and had been awake since half past twelve for no reason she could name, and she was doing what a person does at that hour, which is holding a lit screen four inches from her face and going wherever the tapping takes her.

And she landed on a long, well-written thing about how the resurrection is a borrowed pattern. Older religions. Dying and rising figures. Spring, the corn, the seed in the ground. It had a list. It had names she had never heard and it laid them out calmly and it did not once raise its voice.

She read the whole of it.

Then she put the phone face down on the carpet and lay there with her eyes open until about twenty past three.

She leads a room of forty people on a Tuesday. She has done for six years. On the Tuesday after, she led it, and it was fine, and one woman said afterwards that it was one of the best they had done.

That was in April.

And it is not that she believes the article. She does not, particularly, and she is not stupid and she is aware that a list is not an argument.

It is that she has not been able to un-read it. It sits underneath now. It arrives when she is putting the kettle on. And she has not said one word about it to anybody in that room of forty, because she is the one who is supposed to have this settled.

Not Done In A Corner

Ask where the claim is actually located

Let me start by taking the article seriously, because pretending it was nonsense would be the fastest way to lose you.

Those parallels are not invented. There are older stories with seasonal shapes and there are figures who go down and come back, and people have been noticing that for a very long time, and how close the parallels actually are is argued over by serious people in both directions and has been for a century. Anybody who tells you that debate is finished is selling something.

Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as a way out: you are not required to have this closed in order to lead on a Tuesday. That is not my kind reading of a bad April, it is what stands written in Acts, where Paul makes his case in front of a king and does not appeal to a feeling or a pattern, and the same Holy Spirit who preserved that scene was on the carpet with you at twenty past three.

Read what he says, because it is a strange thing to say if you are inventing something.

The king is familiar with these things, and I can speak freely to him. I am convinced that none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner.Acts 26:26

It was not done in a corner.

He is standing in front of a man with the power to release him or destroy him, and his argument is that the king already knows, because it happened in public, in his own province, within recent memory, to people with names.

That is the thing worth carrying out of this article, and it is not a proof.

A myth is almost always located out of reach: before time, at the beginning of the world, in a season rather than a year. The claim you were reading about is located at a specific governorship, in a specific city, about a named man, in living memory of people the writer expected his audience to be able to go and ask.

Those are different kinds of claim. Not different in truth, necessarily. Different in what would count as checking. That distinction is written into the account itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who kept a courtroom transcript rather than a hymn.

So this is yours right now rather than pending the end of a hundred-year argument: what you hold is not a seasonal pattern with a name attached, because the written word puts the claim in a courtroom in front of somebody who could have contradicted it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who kept that transcript in the record rather than a hymn.

And the guard, because this whole site stands on it. Nothing here closes the question. You will be able to find a serious person who thinks the parallels are close and a serious person who thinks they are superficial, and if you go looking you will find both this week. That is what the ground looks like. It is a floor, not a lid.

The breakthrough

So take it out of the dark.

That is the whole instruction and it is smaller than you think. What has been happening since April is not that you were persuaded. It is that a long, calm, one-in-the-morning argument has been living in you unopposed, because you have never once said it out loud in daylight to a person who could answer.

You are allowed to say it. That is already true of you rather than pending your finding a resolution, because Scripture has a man making this claim in the open in front of somebody who could check it, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to hold a question in silence for six more years.

So tell one person in that room of forty. Not from the front. Choose the one you would trust with anything and say: I read something in April and I have not been able to put it down.

That sentence will cost you about four seconds and it will end the private version of this immediately.

And then read something serious in the other direction, in the daytime, with the lights on and a cup of tea, and expect to end up with a floor rather than a lid. Nothing written promises you a lid, and the Holy Spirit has never once asked anybody to stop looking in order to keep standing. You are not going to reach the end of this and you were never going to. You are going to reach the point where it is a question you are carrying in the open rather than a thing living underneath your kettle.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as somebody who is supposed to have it settled. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. One in the morning, you do not get to be the hour I decide things in. Paul made this claim to a king on the grounds that it was not done in a corner, so it belongs in daylight and in front of somebody who could answer it.
  2. Fear that the woman who leads on Tuesdays is not allowed to be carrying this, get out, in the name of Jesus. A long calm argument has been living in me unopposed since April, and that ends the moment I say it to one person.
  3. Jesus, You came into a named province in living memory and You have never asked me to have the question closed. I am writing it down in daylight, and I am telling one person in that room of forty.
