He can say it exactly and it has been fourteen months.
He is a bit much about all that, if we are honest.
Eleven words, in a meeting he was not in, said by somebody he had always got on with, and repeated back to him afterwards by a third person who thought he would find it funny.
He laughed at the time. He is good at that.
Fourteen months later it is still there. It arrives at odd moments: in the car, halfway through saying something at work, once memorably while he was praying. It has changed the way he talks. He has become careful in a way he was not before, and he can point to about six occasions where he did not say something he would previously have said.
He has never raised it with the man who said it. There would be no point, and it would make it into an incident, and it was probably said lightly and half meant.
And here is the part that actually bothers him.
He does not know whether it is true.
That is what has given the sentence its teeth for fourteen months. Not the unfairness of it. The possibility of its accuracy, which he has no way of settling from the inside, and which he now checks himself against about once a week.
The famous line is an accusation
Let me take you to a sentence you have probably heard quoted approvingly, and show you where it comes from, because almost nobody looks.
There is a city, a disturbance, a house dragged into it, and a crowd shouting at the authorities. And what they shout is this.
These men who have turned the world upside down are come hither also.Acts 17:6
That is a complaint. It is being yelled by people who want the thing stopped, about men they consider a public nuisance, in front of officials who could act on it.
Nobody in that scene means it as praise. It is the exact register of eleven words in a meeting you were not in.
Hear this and take it as already settled rather than as consolation: the description of you that you are carrying is not the measure of you, and the most quoted line in that whole account is a hostile one. That is not my sympathy, it is what stands written in the seventeenth chapter of Acts, and the same Holy Spirit who preserved that shout has been with you in the car at the odd moments.
And notice what the record does with it. It keeps it. It does not correct it, it does not add a defense, it does not have anybody stand up and say that is unfair. The insult goes into the account exactly as shouted and is still being read.
So take this now rather than after you find out what he meant: you are not required to settle the accuracy of that sentence, because the written word keeps an accusation without answering it, and the Spirit of God is the one who has kept you uneasy for fourteen months without ever once agreeing with the charge.
And the guard, because there is a cheap version of this and I will not hand it to you.
Nothing here says every complaint about you is secretly a compliment. That is a comfortable and dangerous idea and it makes a man unteachable. Sometimes a bit much is accurate and is the kindest information available, and a man who cannot hear it will be difficult to be near for forty years.
What is written simply refuses to let a hostile description be the last word, and the Holy Spirit is entirely able to correct you Himself, plainly, without using a sentence you overheard secondhand.
So say the sentence out loud once, and then say what is true instead.
Out loud, in your own voice, alone, this week. He is a bit much about all that, if we are honest. Say it properly. It has been running in your head at half volume for fourteen months and the whisper is where it has been getting its power.
Then say the true thing after it, and be specific rather than defensive. I care about this and I bring it up. Some of the time I read a room badly and I want to learn that. None of that makes me too much.
You are able to do that this week rather than after some verdict comes in, because Scripture keeps a shouted accusation in the record and never once answers it, and the Holy Spirit has been correcting you directly for years and has never needed a secondhand remark to do it.
And then go and use the other part, because you now have information you did not have.
You said you can point to six occasions where you did not say something you would previously have said. Look at those six honestly. Some of them are growth, and you should keep those, and it is entirely possible that man did you a service without meaning to.
The rest of them are silence bought by a sentence, and those need giving back.
Fourteen months of checking yourself weekly against eleven words is not humility and it was never discipline. It is a man being supervised by a remark, and the remark was made lightly, at a table, by somebody who has almost certainly forgotten saying it.
Declare this over yourself
Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a man supervised by a remark. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

- Fear that the sentence might simply be true, get out, in the name of Jesus. Some of what he saw may be real and I will take correction from the Spirit of God directly, and none of it has ever needed to arrive secondhand from a table I was not sitting at.
- Jesus, You have kept me uneasy for fourteen months without once agreeing with the charge. This week I am saying it out loud at full volume, and then I am saying what is true, and the six silences are getting looked at one by one.
