Scattered, And They Talked Anyway

This message is for the move you did not choose, out of the place you had built, and the fact that two years later there are still boxes in the second bedroom

The boxes are in the second bedroom and there are eleven of them and it has been two years.

She knows what is in them. Books, mostly, and the good plates, and the photographs that were on the stairs in the old house because the stairs there had a wall wide enough for them.

The new place does not have a wall like that. That is the reason she gives.

It is not the reason.

The move was not hers. Her husband's work, a decision made in a room she was not in, communicated to her kindly and with real regret and with no actual option attached to it. Four hundred miles. She had built eighteen years in that town. She knew which butcher, which doctor, which of the school mums would actually turn up.

Everybody was sympathetic and everybody was right and nobody was cruel and she still lost all of it in one August.

And the boxes stayed shut, because unpacking is a kind of agreement.

She has not said that out loud. She would probably deny it if you put it to her that plainly. But she knows the difference between a house she lives in and a house she has consented to, and the eleven boxes are standing in that gap holding the line.

Let me say the true thing before anything else. That was a loss. Not an adjustment, not a season, not an opportunity in disguise. A real loss of a real life, and nobody has said so.

Scattered, And They Talked Anyway

The account never calls it a good thing

I want to be careful here, because this category has a version that would insult you.

There is a way of telling this story that says the scattering was secretly wonderful, and I am not going to tell it that way, and the text does not tell it that way either.

Read the first line before you read the second one.

On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.Acts 8:1-4

Mourned deeply for him.

The account puts a burial and deep mourning in the middle of it. It does not skip that to get to the good part. Whatever else this passage is doing, it is not pretending the thing that happened was fine.

And then the last line, flat and without commentary: those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.

Not once they had settled. Not once they had made peace with it. Wherever they went, which is a phrase that includes the first week, and includes the places they did not choose, and includes the ones who never stopped wanting to go home.

So take this now rather than after you have made peace with the move: your life is not on hold pending your agreement, because the written word records people carrying the thing with them into places they had not picked, and the Spirit of God has been with you in a house you never consented to for two years already.

And the guard, and I mean this one seriously.

Nothing here says the persecution was good. Nothing here says your husband's employer was an instrument of anything, or that the four hundred miles were a gift, or that you should be grateful for what you lost.

The account mourns deeply and buries a man and does not tidy it. What is written is only that the scattered ones did not wait, and the Holy Spirit did not withhold Himself from anybody until they were reconciled to their address.

The breakthrough

So open one box.

Not all eleven. One, and today, and put what is inside it where it actually belongs in this house.

The photographs will not go where they went before because there is no wall like that here. Put them somewhere else. Somewhere worse, probably. That is allowed, and it is not a betrayal of the stairs in the old house.

You are able to open that box today rather than after you have forgiven the move, because Scripture shows people carrying this into towns they had not chosen while the grief was still fresh, and the Holy Spirit has never once required your agreement before He would work in a room.

And here is what the box actually is, since you already half know.

It is not storage. It is a position you have been holding for two years, and the position says: I have not accepted this. It is the only protest available to a woman who was told kindly and given no option, and it has cost you every one of those two years. What is written sends the scattered ones out talking wherever they went, and the Holy Spirit has been in this house since the first week the boxes came in.

You can stop holding the line without agreeing that the line should have been crossed. Those are two different things and you have been treating them as one. Acts 8 mourns deeply and buries a man and does not tidy it, and the Holy Spirit has never required your agreement before He would work in a room.

Eighteen years in that town was real and it was taken and nobody has said so plainly. I am saying so. And the plates should be in the cupboard.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a woman holding a line in a spare room. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Two years of waiting to be put back, you are over. Scripture says the scattered ones talked wherever they went, and wherever includes the first week and the places nobody picked.
  2. Fear that unpacking means agreeing the move was right, get out, in the name of Jesus. Refusing to hold the line is not the same as saying the line should have been crossed, and I have been treating those as one thing.
  3. Lord, eighteen years in that town was real and it was taken and You have not once pretended otherwise. Today one box is open and the plates are going in the cupboard, and this is where I live.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
