The Tomb Claim1 Corinthians 15:17

The One I Have Never Looked At

This message is for twenty-two years of believing it and never once letting yourself think directly about the one claim the whole thing rests on

She worked it out on an ordinary Tuesday doing something else entirely, which is how these things arrive.

Twenty-two years. She has read a great deal in that time. She has been to things and led things and there is a shelf in that house that would impress anybody who looked at it.

And she was putting shopping away, and a thought went past that she did not chase, and then she chased it.

I have never once thought about the resurrection directly.

Not never thought about it. She has taught on it. She has sung about it more times than there are days in a year. She could give you four paragraphs on what it means and they would be good paragraphs.

She has never looked at it as a thing that either happened or did not happen on a particular morning.

She has looked slightly to the left of it, her whole adult life, at what it means and what it does and how it changes a person, and she has done that so consistently and for so long that she did not know she was doing it until a Tuesday in the kitchen with a bag of oranges in her hand.

And what came with the realization, immediately, in the same second, was the reason.

She has not looked at it because if she looks at it and it goes, then the whole of it goes, and she is forty-seven, and there is nothing else in the house that would hold.

The One I Have Never Looked At

Paul says outright what happens if it did not occur

Let me put down the fear before anything else, because it is not cowardice and it is extremely common and almost nobody says it out loud.

You are not avoiding it because you suspect it is false. You are avoiding it because of what it holds up. Twenty-two years, a marriage that has been shaped by it, two children raised inside it, and a self you would not recognize without it. That is not a small load and no sensible person pokes at the one beam holding a roof.

Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as reassurance: you are allowed to look straight at it, and the account itself insists on it. That is not my kind reading of a Tuesday, it is what stands written in the fifteenth chapter of First Corinthians, and the same Holy Spirit who carried that page was in the kitchen with the oranges.

Read what Paul does, which almost no founder of anything has ever done.

And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.1 Corinthians 15:17

He states the condition under which the whole thing collapses. That is what is written, in the first person, and the Holy Spirit saw to it that the line was never softened.

He does not soften it into a metaphor. He does not say it would still be meaningful, or that the values would remain, or that the community would still have something worth keeping. He says: if this did not happen, you have nothing.

That is a man betting everything on one event, in writing, and telling his readers exactly where to aim if they want to bring it down.

So this is yours right now rather than pending some braver season: the looking is not a betrayal, because the written word puts the falsifying condition on the page in the first person and invites the reader to see it, and the Spirit of God is the one who has kept you at a slight angle for twenty-two years without ever making it forbidden.

And here is the thing the slight angle has actually cost you, which is bigger than the question.

A person who has never looked at the center has never chosen it. You have inherited it, and taught it, and defended it, and sung it, and you have never once stood in front of it as an adult and said yes to the thing itself. Nothing written forbids that looking, and the Holy Spirit has kept you at a slight angle for twenty-two years without ever making it forbidden.

That is why the fear is so large. It is not the fear of finding it false. It is the fear that goes with a thing you have never actually picked up.

And the guard, because this site does not do the other thing: looking will not produce certainty. The historical material is real and it is argued about by serious people and it will not close. What is written offers ground and never the end of the question, and the Holy Spirit has never once handed anybody a proof.

The breakthrough

So look at it, this week, on purpose, for about an hour.

Not to settle it. Not to arrive somewhere. Sit down with the earliest accounts of that morning and read them straight through, all four, as claims about an event rather than as readings for a season.

You can do that now rather than after you have got braver, because Scripture states the collapse condition itself and does not flinch, and the Holy Spirit is not made nervous by a woman looking directly at the middle of her own life.

Expect it to be strange. Read as an adult and you will find the accounts are not tidy, that they differ in details, and that people argue about the differences in both directions and have for centuries. Neither the tidiness you were half expecting nor the collapse you were half expecting is what is actually there.

And then do the second thing, which is the point of all of it.

Say yes to it deliberately, out loud, as a forty-seven year old woman who has looked. Not because it is settled. Because you have finally stood in front of the actual claim and chosen it, rather than carrying something you were handed at twenty-five and have been protecting ever since. What is written invited exactly that, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brought you to a kitchen with a bag of oranges.

That is a different kind of belief and it does not break in a kitchen.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as somebody protecting a beam. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Habit of looking slightly to the left, you are broken this morning. Paul writes that if Christ has not been raised then the faith is futile, so the center was always meant to be looked at directly.
  2. Fear that if I look at it and it goes then the whole house goes, get out, in the name of Jesus. What I have been carrying is a thing I was handed at twenty-five and have never once picked up, and that is why the fear has been this size.
  3. Jesus, You put the collapse condition on the page Yourself and never flinched from it. I am reading the four accounts straight through this week, and then I am saying yes to it out loud as a woman who has looked.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
